Devastating fires broke out on the beautiful mountains surrounding our hometown. The fires raged for days and spread from Ou Kaapse Weg to Boyes Drive to Chapman’s Peak and other parts of our beautiful city.
Once the fires were extinguished and the mountain pass reopened to traffic, I noted with sadness the devastation and destruction the fires left in its wake. There was very little beauty left, only blackness, burnt road signs and melted road barriers.
Road signs meant to keep us safe on the road were destroyed, and melted road barriers distorted the boundaries meant to protect us from going over the mountain’s edge. The devastation and destruction had reduced hectares of beautiful land to ashes.
Sex outside of God’s design for marriage between one man and one woman, for life, has the same effect on our lives. Sexual perversion, sexual immorality, promiscuity and adultery amongst other things, leaves devastating blackness and ugliness on the human soul.
Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord. Acts 3:19
However, there is hope. Just as God in His wisdom sent a gentle rain to help put out the mountain fires, He is able to pour out His Holy Spirit upon the out of control fires in our lives and raise us out of the ashes. He can, and wants to give us beauty for ashes and joy for our sadness, and rebuild the ruins and bring new life into our desolate lives. He can, and wants to free us from emotional shackles, which have held us captive.
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 2 Corinthians 5:17
Applying Biblical truth to every area of our lives is imperative and will facilitate healing, restoration and wholeness. There is life after abuse but it starts with forgiveness. Forgiving ourselves and our abuser frees us to receive God’s forgiveness and begin our journey to a life of wholeness and pure joy!
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this, you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 1 Peter 1:3-6
